PRS8 Switch Repair

If like me you have an early Tiger Cub fitted with a PSR8 switch, chances are the thread holding the switch to the Nacelle will be worn, may be stripped or may be about to.
The problem with the thread on the switch being cut from Bakelite and the nut holding it being in metal, is that sooner or later the switch will work loose and the inevitable happens. Trying to re-tighten the nut strips the thread, and no matter what you try and do, the switch always works loose.

So I decided to try and effect a more permanent repair.
The PSR8 switch is held together using 3 x 6ba screws. You will find they don't go all the way through the switch, even though the holes are tapped right through. The simple answer to fix the problem is to get longer screws. I used 1 1\4" long ones bought on eBay. These screw right through the switch with about 1\4" sticking out of the top. But make sure you do this by only removing and replacing one screw at a time, otherwise the switch will fall apart and they are really difficult to put back together again! |
You then use these screws to hold the switch on to the Nacelle.
You will find there are two holes in the Nacelle already (not sure why) but you will need to drill a third one. Drill the hole slightly larger than the screw in order to aid fitting the switch. The trim marked with 'O P H' will have to be drilled also. (I realise some of you may not like to do this for originality, but I prefer to have a switch that works.) The next thing is to fit the switch and trim, fit the 6ba nuts and washers on the screws and tightening the switch up. There will be some thread protruding out of the nuts which can be trimmed off, but as it involved taking all the screws out again, I didn't bother. When the light switch knob is refitted, it clears the nuts and you will find the switch is now firmly held in place. I did fit the original large nut back on the switch. It no longer has a use but I put it there so I wouldn't loose it. This mod is an easy and cheap repair and doesn't affect the PSR8 switch workings in any way. |
