Resources for Information
Along with this website there are two other reliable bodies of resource for Triumph's Tiger Cub and Terrier machines. The Triumph Owners' Motorcycle Club (TOMCC) which has a dedicated Tiger Cub and Terrier Section (TC&T Section) and the Triumph Terrier and Tiger Cub Owners Association (TTCC). They continue to serve as the main sources of reliable information, help with technical matters and provide opportunities for social contact between fellow enthusiasts.
The Triumph Owners' Motorcycle Club has The Tiger Cub and Terrier Section which provides a number of services to its members. Two of the most popular being the Triumph Motorcycle Dating Service and the Club Archives, which along with a monthly Tiger Cub and Terrier report in the TOMCC magazine featuring stories from owners and machine information and an active TC&T Section members forum on the TOMCC website, gives owners access to a full range of services, help and information.
To contact the TC&T Section, please email: steve@tigercubandterrier.com The TOMCC is accredited by the DVLA to issue Certificates of Age on Triumph motorcycles. So if you have a Tiger Cub or Terrier motorcycle that has never been registered, or one that the DVLA do not have any records for, and you wish to retain the original (or obtain an age-related) registration number plate then you need this service. Vehicle registrations began to be computerised back in the 1970's but before then registrations were carried out by County Councils or Borough Councils. During the course of computerisation many registrations were either lost or not transferred by the various councils. The result being many vehicles were not listed on the new register. In order to retain an original (or obtain an age-related) registration number you need to apply for a Dating Certificate, and for Triumph motorcycles the TOMCC is the authorised vehicle enthusiasts club. |
To apply for a Date Certificate for your Tiger Cub or Terrier you need to get as much documentation on the machine you can along with as many photographs as possible. As a minimum you should have photos of both sides of the bike along with the Engine Number and Frame Number. Original Bills of Sale and/or Service documents will also help. In fact, any dated information you can supply on your machine will make your case that much stronger.
Once you have got all your evidence, send it to the TOMCC's Machine Registrar - details and costs are listed on the TOMCC website - www.tomcc.org
Once you have your Dating Certificate, it can then be sent to the DVLA along with the appropriate forms to obtain the authorisation to use the original registration number. More information about registering your motorcycle can be obtained from the Gov.uk website.

The TOMCC Archives is also a valuable source of information on Triumph motorcycles. There are numerous original workshop manuals, spares catalogues, factory records, and other information. This reference material is used by the Club to answer all sorts of queries - such as original colour schemes, factory fitted accessories, and what parts go with what engine and frame.
Another major resource has been The Tiger Cub & Terrier Register run by Mike Estall and which included the "Register of Survivors" listing more than 12,000 bikes, frames and engines surviving all over the world together with a whole range of other information services.
Mike was also the author of "The Triumph Tiger Cub Bible''. A reference book and history of the Triumph Tiger Cub and Terrier containing over two hundred illustrations, huge amounts of previously unpublished information, detailed specification changes listed by date and machine number, road test figures from the UK and USA and full delivery details of over 112,671 machines sent to 153 countries between 1953 and 1970.
Sadly, Mike Estall passed away on 22nd October 2021 and it's true to say he will be sorely missed by everyone in the Tiger Cub and Terrier world.
Around the same time, Veloce Publishing had decided to reprint a limited run of Mike’s book in their ‘Classic Reprint’ series this time as a soft cover publication, but at this present time they no longer have any stocks.

Back in 2002 he assisted Mike Powell to start the Triumph Terrier and Tiger Cub Owners Association (TTCC), a loose association of owners and enthusiasts. It has no rules or committee and ownership of a bike is not mandatory.
After Mike Estall's death, his family donated the contents of his files, computer records and all the information and knowledge he had accumulated throughout his life concerning the bikes to the TTCC, thus ensuring it can be passed on to future generations and not lost forever. Mike’s diligent recording of all known surviving examples of the machines in his Register of Machines will be continued and the information sheets, manuals and other technical publications he produced will also be available. Mike Powell can be contacted at email: Mike@tigercubclub.com |
What all the above means is that through this website, the Tiger Cub and Terrier section of the TOMCC and the TTCC, these machines have one of the best support networks of any classic motorcycle.
