Who is this rider, and do you know the story behind this picture?
It's obviously not stopped the rider, to the amusement of the four onlookers, and he looks to be enjoying himself in spite of the 'minor' inconvenience of carrying his Tiger Cub's rear tyre over his shoulder! Well, it's thank you to TOMCC member, Chris Cullen, who has sent in the following information about the photograph... |
I am able to confirm the rider is John Giles ("Gilo" by nickname) who was a works trials rider for Triumph.
When doing National Service in 1960-1962, we had 6 Cubs on user trials for the military and rode in the 1961 ISDT in Wales - they were fitted with 3.5" rear tyres.
I would think the reason John removed the tyre was because as a works rider he would have a 4" rear tyre and when punctured it came off the wheel inner rim bead and jammed in the swinging arm and chain guard, as they were very tight in the swinging arm.

Where was it taken?
The picture was taken at the 1956 Travers Trophy Trial and is of John riding back to the start after suffering a puncture on the Dryghyll Sike section.
