Here's my trials Cub which I bought last year to compete in local trials and in particular to compete in this year's (2020) Arbuthnot trial (unfortunately cancelled due to covid).
When I bought the Cub, the engine was partly dismantled and needed re-ringing. Since then the following modifications have been done:
When I bought the Cub, the engine was partly dismantled and needed re-ringing. Since then the following modifications have been done:
- Sports Cub head with Dellorto carb
- Updated valve springs
- 7:1 piston and standard camshaft
- Later crankcases with ball race both sides of crank
- Drive-side crankcase modified for Electrex World ignition
- Chain tensioner fitted to primary chain with smaller engine sprocket
- Crankcase and gearbox breathers fitted with non-return valves
- Clutch operating arm modified for lighter clutch
- Rear of primary chaincase modified with removable section to allow change of gearbox sprocket
- Crankcase cut away around gearbox sprocket for mud clearance
- UPB front forks with Armac aluminium yokes
- Wider swing-arm fitted for clearance on 4" tyre
- Renthal fat arms with Domino levers
- Fast acting brake cams front and rear
- Sammy Miller oil tank acting as stressed member to support swan-neck headstock
- Modified rear subframe to lower seat height
- Headstock modified to take taper roller bearings
- Aluminium front wheel spindle
- Falcon rear shocks
With the help of the TOMCC I have managed to get an age-related registration number, though I did have to fit a new frame loop with a correctly stamped number, as the original frame had been re-stamped. The new frame was apparently originally sent from the factory in 1960 to John Surtees Developments. So it's a mongrel or a trick Cub as they say, but surprisingly nice to ride. |
